Diabetes today is one of the most common health problems, currently affecting over 20 million Americans, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Diabetes is an autoimmune disease that affects the person’s ability to produce insulin, a hormone that allows people to obtain and consume energy from the food they consume. Diabetes usually develops when the immune system attacks and destroys insulin-producing cells, known as beta cells.

The root cause is yet to be discovered, but scientists assume that genetic and environmental factors play an important role.  While this disease is extremely common and its prevalence is constantly on the rise, modern medicine claims that it is incurable!

However, certain methods and potential cures are showing promising results. One of those is ayahuasca, a chemical found in countless plants worldwide as well as in psychoactive mixtures.

According to a study led by researchers at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, funded by JDRF and the National Institutes of Health and published in the journal Nature Medicine,

“Using three different mouse and human islet in vivo–based models, we show that harmine is able to induce beta cell proliferation, increase islet mass and improve glycemic control. These observations suggest that harmine analogs may have unique therapeutic promise for human diabetes therapy.”

The researchers found that harmine is capable of reproducing beta cells in a culture. The injected it in diabetic mice, in which it triggered beta cell production and normalized blood glucose levels. Specifically, harmine tripled the number of beta cells in the mice` pancreas.

The study analyzed over 100,000 potential drugs, and harmine was the only one to stimulate human insulin-producing beta cells to multiply.

What About Harmine-Containing Ayahuasca?

Beta cell regeneration is considered to be the ultimate cure for diabetes, although further research is needed.  The next step is developing drug candidates which would target beta cells only.

It is natural to ask if there is a chemical in a plant like Ayahuasca, why not take it instead of testing the chemical and producing more drugs. Well, this plant is illegal in the U.S, and to use it legally, you have to travel in the Amazonian jungle.

It worth mentioning that there have been some developments at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute in diabetes research, whose researchers found how to make large quantities of beta cells.  They compare these findings to development of antibiotics, which come with some quite damaging consequences.

The stem cell-derived beta cells are tested on animal models and hopefully clinical trials will start as soon as possible.

Effects Of Diet And Lifestyle

Anything you eat, think, and feel matters. It is crucial to be familiar with the options you can choose from, depending on what you feel it is the right thing for you.
